Built-Up Roofing (BUR)

A built-up flat roof (BUR) is a traditional hot tar and gravel flat roof. Traditionally made up of three or more ply sheets of roofing felt (tar paper) and/or asphalt-based roofing tar covered by a layer of smooth river stone, BUR flat roofs are affordable and durable flat roofing systems.

In South Florida, BUR is a good choice because it is wind and hail resistant. It can withstand harsh thunderstorms, smoldering heat, and offers reasonable protection against impact from wind borne debris.

Other considerations to note about built-up flat roofing systems – BUR can weigh over 20 lbs per square foot, so it is important that the building structure can support it. Disadvantages include a strong odor during installation and a low tolerance to pooling water.

Rainbow Roofing can design a BUR to meet a broad range of specifications, depending on the unique characteristics of your home or building.

Modified Bitumen (MB) Flat Roof

Modified Bitumen (MB) roofing is also a popular commercial and residential flat roofing system.

There are many reasons that a MB flat roof is a good choice for South Florida— It has good waterproofing properties, high tensile strength, and a reflective top surfacing option, which can save on energy costs.

Modified bitumen is typically installed in layers using a torch-down or asphalt applied method. This is a labor intensive process that must be performed by an experienced roofing contractor. See why Rainbow Roofing is your best option for a South Florida Modified Bitumen specialist.

EPDM Roofing | Rubber Roofing

Short for Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer, EPDM roofing is a durable rubber flat roofing membrane that is specifically engineered to resist damage from sunlight. EPDM membranes are waterproof, weather-resistant, low maintenance, and easy to repair. Rubber membrane roofs are relatively lightweight and are more durable than BUR and MB flat roof systems. EPDM rubber roofing materials are also highly recyclable, making it a great choice for the environmentally conscious.

Rainbow Roofing only utilizes EPDM membranes that are white in color because they reflect the South Florida sun’s rays and help to reduce energy costs. With proper maintenance, EPDM roofs can last 20 years or more.

PVC Roofing | TPO Roofing

PVC (poly vinyl chloride) and TPO (thermal poly olefin) roofing membranes are the most widely recognized hot weldable thermoplastic roofing materials. Both PVC and TPO roofing membranes have a high-tensile strength and are highly reflective which means cooler buildings, lower energy costs, and outstanding protection against the harsh South Florida weather.

PVC roofing membranes are waterproof, flame resistant, environmentally friendly, lightweight, strong, and durable. Featuring a minimum tensile strength of 300 pounds per inch compared to the industry-recommended 200 PPI, PVC roofing membranes are a strong and flexible option for your South Florida flat roof.

TPO (thermo-plastic olephine) roofing membrane is another hot-weldable flat roof option that is strong (300 PPI), durable, lightweight, and environmentally friendly. TPO roofing membranes are water resistant, resistant to fungal growth, and also help to lower building cooling costs.

Because both PVC membrane and TPO roof installation requires hot air welding skill to ensure that there are no leaks, Rainbow Roofing’s team of expert roofing contractors are the ideal choice for your project. We have been installing, repairing, and replacing PVC membrane and TPO membrane flat roofs in Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties for over 30 years!
